Makerere University, in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, is proud to announce the continuation of the Scholars Program, extending its commitment from 2023 to 2034. This initiative aims to provide 1,000 scholarships over the course of a decade to talented young individuals from Sub-Saharan Africa who encounter financial barriers to accessing higher education.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University offers comprehensive benefits to its recipients, ensuring they can pursue their educational aspirations without financial constraints and emerge as leaders within their communities. Here are the key components of this scholarship:
Full Tuition Coverage: The scholarship encompasses the entire tuition fees for the duration of the scholar's academic program, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder talented students from pursuing higher education.
Accommodation and Meals: Scholars receive support for university housing or accommodation, as well as meal plans, fostering a conducive living environment that facilitates focused studies.
Stipends: Recipients are provided with stipends to cover basic living expenses and academic materials, easing the burden of day-to-day expenditures.
Health Insurance: Comprehensive health insurance is included throughout the duration of the study program, ensuring that health challenges do not hinder academic progress.
Travel Assistance: For scholars studying away from their home country or region, the program may offer travel allowances for transportation to and from the university at the commencement and conclusion of their studies.
Eligibility and Application Process for Undergraduate and Master’s Programs:
Undergraduate Scholarships:
Eligibility: Applicants must be under 28 years old (32 for refugees, IDPs, and individuals with disabilities), demonstrate significant financial need, and have completed Advanced level education in Africa without holding any other scholarships.
Program Focus: Preference is given to degree programs aligned with strategic development sectors such as Agriculture, Tourism, Mineral Development, Infrastructure, and Human Capital Development.
Master’s Scholarships:
Eligibility: Applicants must be under 35 years old (40 for refugees and individuals with disabilities), possess a Bachelor’s degree from an African institution, and exhibit financial hardship along with leadership potential.
Additional Requirement: A motivation statement (maximum 500 words) outlining the societal challenges the applicant aims to address through their studies.
