The U.S. Embassy in Ghana is looking for a reliable and experienced Chauffeur to join our team. This role offers a unique opportunity to support vital research projects and daily operations while ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of personnel and equipment.
Job Duties
As a Chauffeur at the U.S. Embassy, your responsibilities will include:
- Serving as a research field assistant, aiding in the placement, maintenance, cleaning, and repair of entomological and mammalian traps.
- Transporting scientific equipment and supplies between various field sites and supporting research protocols.
- Acting as an intermediary between senior scientists and community members, and collecting samples from hospital labs for delivery to designated laboratories, such as the Noguchi lab or other specified facilities.
- Performing routine maintenance and upkeep of pickup trucks and SUVs used for research site visits.
- Making daily trips within the Accra Metropolitan Area to transport personnel, materials, or documents.
- Thoroughly inspecting vehicles for damage, fuel levels, fluid levels, battery connections, tire conditions, and safety devices before and after each trip.
- Promptly reporting any vehicular accidents and completing comprehensive accident reports for submission to the Director of NAMRU-EURAFCENT.
Qualifications and Evaluations
Requirements:
Experience:
- At least one year of job-related experience as a field assistant.
- Minimum of two years of driving experience.
Job Knowledge:
- Proficient in vehicle operation and maintenance.
- Knowledge of local traffic laws and regulations.
- Familiarity with local terrain and traffic conditions.
Education:
- Completion of secondary school is required.
Language Proficiency:
- Limited proficiency in English (speaking, reading, and writing).
- Good working knowledge of any Ghanaian language (speaking, reading, and writing).
Skills and Abilities:
- Physically capable of performing loading and unloading tasks, handling heavy objects smoothly and efficiently.
- Ability to lift a maximum of 51 lbs. (23 kg) in compliance with OSHA standards.
- Proficient in using warehouse tools and operating equipment such as forklifts, hand trolleys, and electronic lifters.
- Capable of diagnosing and performing preventive maintenance and basic automotive repairs.
- Quick to identify vehicle defects and report them to the supervisor.
- Adaptable to working in all types of weather and environmental conditions, including severe cold, extreme heat, wet or dry weather, and high winds.
